︎︎︎ Send Me Your Third Space Location - A zine for the Museum Of Youth Culture

In early 2024, a group of creative individuals passionate about youth stories came together as the Youth Collective, guided by The Museum of Youth Culture, and choosing a research topic presented in the zine “Send Me Your 3rd Space Location”.

The project explores the importance of Third Spaces; if our home is our fist space, our school or workplace is our second space, what third spaces are available (and affordable!) for young people to socialize?

A close team of 4 creatives collaborated with each other and with relevant organizations and communities across South London, conducting oral histories, documenting through writing and photography, and investigating the connection between youth and Third Spaces.

The result is a unique publication, accompanied by a workbook, a creative solution to invite more young people to imagine and build their dream Third Spaces.

Drawing on conversations about community, economic climate, development, and counter-cultures, the Collective interviewed those people who are fostering connection and community across 5 different places in South London, which we consider as Third Spaces.

From the Sainsbury’s car park in Colliers Wood, home to skating community Rolling Distance, to Peckham based jam session and overall temple for musicians Orii at Jumbi, the publication’s purpose is to document, support, and celebrate existing Third Spaces and the communities around them, while simultaneously inspiring more young people to build new spaces for the future.
The Collective visited each space and recorded oral histories throughout the process. The thoughts and considerations from each participant, summed with our own personal research, led to the writing and storytelling of the zine.

Within the team, I served as the main graphic designer, art director and print  production manager, liaising with the Museum Of Youth Culture’s team and external printers for the final product.

I was also involved as a photographer, providing visual documentation for the zine and its exhibition event.

The main publication is accompanied by a small workbook, a playful and customizable publication that adds an element of interactivity to the experience.

Featuring youthful doodles and handwritten instructions, the workbook presents several different prompts inviting the reader to reflect on the third spaces they visit, dream the ones that are lacking, so that one day they can finally be built and become reality.
